Just shoot me now.

Precisely 7 days ago this morning at more or less the same time I was sitting in my GP's office waiting to see her. I had a bad sinus cold and she gave me some meds. Three days later and I could smell again! (Himself was glad, I could now smell burning food...). Fast forward to Sunday night. Cold sweat, chills, heatwave. Snot pouring out of my nostrils and hacking it up from my lungs. Ja tmi I know, but suck it up! :)

Last night was bad, I coughed and kept the entire household awake. I'm going back to see her, this 3 day antibiotic shit isn't going to cut it this time round! And sitting under a blanket with a jacket and tracksuit on underneath isn't making me feel any better either! Tomorrow night I have to at least be able to taste the 5 course meal and the wine that goes with each course!

Have a laugh!

Ja, please everyone laugh at me.

Friday I blogged about Himself's birthday, Him turning 42 this year. J and C each made him their own birthday cards with a huge 42 on it. He's actually 41.......

I'll be making up for that faux pas for a very very very long time!

Cheesecake solves all problems!

I'm getting over my cholestrol being high again. I was really disappointed on Wednesday when she called and told me what my count was. I'd done everything I was supposed to but you know, shit happens. Life isn't standing still just because I have a cholestrol issue.

My cold finally subsided from a sinus invasion, to a snot fest to almost nothing. Finally. My mil keeps saying get the damn flu shot and I'm like why? Every time I have ever had a flu shot I have been even more sick than ever. In the last 5 years, I have only had 2 very bad colds that have turned out to be more than just a runny nose. Two years ago I spent 3 days in bed out of it and last week I got antibiotics for my sinuses. Not bad going, really so why mess with a good thing?

It's Himself's 42nd birthday on Sunday. Hence the cheesecake. I'm making this recipe :

Preheat the oven to 150C

Crust :
200g pack of smashed biscuits (something with chocolate in it)
1/3 cup melted butter
3ml cinnamon
3ml ginger

Mix it all together and mash it down in a 22cm springform pan. Refrigerate.

Cheesecake :
3 XL eggs
1/2 cup caster sugar
1 tbs flour
500g cream cheese (sub creme fraische, cottage cheese)
1tsp vanilla extract
1 cup whipped cream, very cold

Beat it all together in a bowl, fold in the cream and pour into the pan. Place the pan in the preheated oven on a baking tray and bake for 50 minutes or so until a toothpick comes out clean.

I might add a sour cream topping, I might make a cherry topping....I might make both. What do you think?

Fuck

Just .... fuck! My doc called, my cholestrol's gone from 3 to over 7. Fucking wonderful. So let's see if Discovery will be willing to change my meds to chronic.

Dammit, I don't mess with my meds!

Responsibilities, blood tests and a fly

This whole week J is class leader (one of 3). On Monday afternoon he informed me that he had to be at school at least at 7am every morning so that he could do his chores. WTF Dude! I have to beg you to keep your room tidy and you want to do chores at school!!

The class leaders have to make sure that the windows are open, the bins are clean, the whiteboard is cleaned and that the date is changed to the relevant day, papers laying around are tidied up....

Actually it's quite sweet how he clears up the classroom now. He has promised though to show the same enthusiasm for his room. Time will tell.

This morning my alarm went off at 5.10am (yes that's sparrowfart I know) and I went back to sleep, only to wake up suddenly at 6am! J was worried that he'd be late but we got him to school by 7am. Then it was a mad rush to get to the hospital lab to have blood drawn. It's that time of year for my cholestrol and glucose tests. I'm not worried, I've been good and taking my meds. Just wish that the poor lab tech nurse didn't have to struggle so with my pathetic veins. I don't have any so any time I have to have blood drawn, the vein in my hand has to be mutilated so that they can get a few drops of blood. Leaves me with a lovely bruise on the top of my hand!

And the fly bit I hear you ask? There's nothing more that I positively hate than flies. There is currently a huge hairy black thing buzzing around the study and do you think I can swat it? NO!

I just can't shake it

Winter is here

And along with this season comes the endless round of colds, cold meds, doctors' visits and general all round snottiness.

Himself came back from China on the 22nd of April with a cold, the week before the swine flu epidemic made headlines (no I don't have swine flu, for the 1000th time!).

Himself then took some time off the week after we all voted, only to spend it moping around really sick. Poor bugger. The next week He went back to work, having mostly recovered from his cold.

Now it's my turn. Last week was great, kept the fluids up and kept dosing myself with Corenza, Cal-c-vita and ACC200. My snot level decreased and it looked like the cold was just that...much snottiness about nothing. This week I feel like all kinds of shit. My sinuses are blocked, my eyes tear up at the mere thought of another tissue scraping across my blood red fiery nostrils. My nose feels much like I imagine a trainee dragon does after burning it's nostrils the first few times with fire! My throat feels like I am dragging sandpaper over it every time I breathe.

At precisely 11.30am this morning, I am going to see my doctor. Hopefully she can give me something that will get rid of this cold and banish the snot from my sinuses.

ETA : It is now 1.23pm. My first round of antibiotics is in....a nasal gel I had to smear inside each nostril (I feel like a kid picking it's nose! :) ), and pain meds. Apparently I have a sinus infection and an ear infection. I only felt the pain from the sinus infection.

I was born to eat soup....

For the longest time, J and C refused to eat soup. First it was too chunky then it was too watery, too meaty, too veggie, too this too that! Eventually I gave up offering them soup to eat and Himself and I would stuff our faces.

Tuesday it was so cold I decided a pot of soup would be ideal for the cold night. Took out some steak, diced and browned it with loads of garlic...the smell in the kitchen was heavenly! Added loads of veggies and lentils and cooked it on low the whole day. That night, I dished up 4 bowls, put some buttered slices of brown bread on a plate and sat back to watch my two. C dipped a piece of bread into her bowl....sniffed it....tasted it....dipped some more....J cautiously tried a spoon and then another and another. Before they knew it, their bowls were finished.

Wednesday morning, while making their school lunches, J asked if he could have some soup and bread to school....and could I put it in his new container...the one you heat up with hot water before putting something hot in, almost like a thermos for food. C saw that he was getting his new container to school and asked if she could get some soup too and not to forget the buttered bread. On the way to school he told C that he was definately born to eat soup.

Last night we had the last of the soup, well J and C had the last of the soup. Both were sad when they realised it was the last and that they would not be getting soup to school today for lunch.

Passing of the Light Sabre

We bought a Wii with some games and a Wii Fit last year, supposedly for the exercise (Himself and I are blubbering whales) and to entertain the kids on rainy days.

The games have seen more action than the Wii Fit....but that's a whole nother post!

When Star Wars Clone Wars came out, I took J to see it. I thought, hey cool perfect opportunity to pass the light sabre onto the next generation. He seemed to enjoy the experience but I think I was definately the kid that afternoon! Until the Wii game for Clone Wars came out that is.

J now swears he's a Jedi Master! This new generation of kids, they have no appreciation for stuff. Why's it got to be about the computer game? :)

Life happens sometimes....

So, I haven't posted in a while. Life happened.

Let's see, we voted on the 22nd. That went well. The ANC for the first time since 1994, did not get their 2/3 majority. Looks like their popularity may be waning after all. I wonder though, how many voters have been lost from the older generation, the one that lived under apartheid. I wonder too if the loss in majority comes rather from a more well informed youth, those who were just 17 and not able to vote in the last election 4 years ago, as well as those who turned 18 in the past 4 years. People I have spoken with in the last few days since the election seem to think that it is the younger generation who are responsible for the waning popularity, I'm not so sure.

The past week He has been on leave, it was a public holiday on Monday and again today so what's the point in working 3 days when no one else is at work? It was great having Himself home for a few days but shitty that he had a snotfest cold that he passed onto me. At least we were able to "sleep in" without the kids disturbing us! He also took the kids to school every morning, leaving me to schlepp around in my pjs until 10am. I even got taken out for a meal! If you are ever anywhere near the Southdowns Centre, make your way over to Doppio Zero and try their breakfast menu, I highly recommend the pineapple, pear, mint and ginger smoothie to go with your Benini Eggs (have it with spinach). He had two paper thin pancakes stuffed to the brim with fresh fruit and cream on the side. Cappocchinos are also tdf!

The rest of this weekend will definately be spent sneezing and dying under my duvet (doona for my Aussie friends). Much rain is predicted until Monday.
